Think Tanks
......................................................................................................................
A think tank can be broadly described as a group that carries out research projects with the general aim of supporting and advocating a particular socio-political standpoint. Concentrations vary between think tanks, and their work may cover anything from social policy, political strategy, science or technology issues to industrial or business policies. Think tanks fall in and out of favour with Governments, but those at the forefront of the political zeitgeist can often have a powerful effect on policy direction. Their influence of contemporary UK politics should not be underestimated.
A report put together by the Guardian in 2004, profiling the leading UK think tanks of the time.
