The Refugee Council is the UK’s foremost charity working with refugees and asylum seekers. We are calling for refugees to be given the protection they need, to be treated with respect and understanding, and to be able to enjoy the same rights, opportunities and responsibilities as other members of our society. Through campaigning and lobbying for positive changes in policy and practice, we are working for a better deal for people claiming asylum in the UK or building a new life here.
We are looking for a campaigner to promote and drive our work in the Yorkshire and Humberside area. You will provide staff, volunteers and local groups, including Refugee Community Organisations with the tools and support they need to campaign on our issues. You will represent the Refugee Council in regional networks and lobby meetings.
Working as part of the Parliamentary and Campaigns team, you will also work closely with media colleagues, developing media contacts and identifying opportunities to promote the Refugee Council’s campaigns in local and regional media.
You will have experience of local campaigning, and of working with Refugee Community Organisations and volunteers. Experience of dealing with the media is also desirable. You’ll be able to manage your own workload and be comfortable working with different departments in an organisation. You must also have a commitment to Equal Opportunities and to the work and values of the Refugee Council.
Interviews are provisionally set for the week commencing Monday 15th February 2010 with a view to an immediate start.
