In response to growing interest in the working of the public affairs industry, a couple of helpful textbooks have been published to act as a primer for those new to the field.

Public Affairs in Practice: A Practical Guide to Lobbying by Stuart Thompson and Stephen A. John.

Published in 2006, this paperback is the most recent foray in to the market. Dry in places but reasonably comprehensive, it provides a good overview of the essentials.

The Handbook of Public Affairs by Phil Harris and Craig S. Fleisher

At over six hundred pages long, this is not for the faint-hearted. As you may expect, it is an extremely thorough review and has received good critical feedback. However, the ambitious price may mean this is a purchase for company tab rather than the individual.

For those looking to get a more detailed or advanced view, other good works include;

  • Machiavelli in Brussels: The Art of Lobbying the EU by Rinus van Schendelen
  • EU Lobbying: Principals, Agents and Targets, Strategic Interest Intermediation in EU Policy-making by Irina Michalowitz
  • Democracy and Lobbying in the European Union by K Karr

All these books can be found at Amazon.
