The Arthritis Foundation National Office has a challenging position available in its Public Policy and Advocacy department located in Washington, DC. The Director, Advocacy under the direction of the Chief Public Policy Officer, is accountable for initiating, planning and executing the AF legislative agenda focused on influencing Congress and other health policy decision makers. Directs research and analysis of federal legislation of importance to people with arthritis in the areas of medical research and public health funding and quality health care; recommends and directs appropriate strategies and tactics; converts research, analysis and recommended strategies/tactics into needed documents, external and internal updates and reports, testimony, public comments, articles, action alerts, issue briefs, and other communications. Develops and manages relationships with key Congressional and Executive agency staff as well as staff of organizations in DC involved with primary policy areas. Garners necessary support for passage of AF backed legislation. Serves as front line communicator of AF’s public policy positions. Interacts with the Foundation’s affiliates and grassroots advocates in developing and coordinating a national strategy to implement the AF’s national legislative objectives.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree plus 3-5 years Capitol Hill experience or advocacy work in a non-profit, government or corporate setting as a lobbyist focused on health. Must have demonstrated policy analysis skills, as well as comfort and familiarity with reading and analyzing legislation. Advanced analytical and writing skills to guide the creation and development of AF policy is necessary. Must have strong interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills and the ability to travel and work independently with limited supervision.
