Directly reports to the Sr. Vice President, Policy & Government Relations. Acts as a leading representative of AHCA’s positions and policies before the U.S. Congress, the executive branch, regulatory bodies, other organizations, and coalitions with specific focus on the US Senate. Plays a significant role in working with association members and other staff in setting and promoting industry policies consistent with AHCA’s policy objectives.
Responsibilities and Results:
1. Takes a leading role in lobbying for the political position of the association and utilizes the political process to successfully implement them into law.
2. Develops relationships with members of Congress, their senior staff, key executive branch officials, state legislators and/or government relations representatives from other groups that foster access to the policymaking process and the understanding of complex issues.
3. Develops political and policy positions on critical issues affecting the industry.
4. Provides senior level representation for AHCA within Washington, DC health care community.
5. Provides political analysis and develops political strategy based on extensive experience with the legislative and political process.
6. Reviews and provides comments on materials or position papers for delivery to key political decision makers
7. Routinely communicates to the membership on activities of the department and developments on Capitol Hill.
8. Results include passage of favorable legislation as well as defeating critical legislation to the industry.
9. Represents and presents the AHCA position to AHCA members at member gatherings.
10. Other duties as assigned.
Education/Training:
• B.A. plus minimum of 10 years related government affairs experience, preferably in a health and public policy related field.
• Extensive relationships with US Senators and their staff and/or White House political and health care policy personnel
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills, and have the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external audiences.
• Knowledge of, and extensive experience with, the legislative and regulatory process.
• Ability to harmonize competing interests of industry segments into workable strategies, and the ability to interrelate optimally with staff to evoke maximum performance.
