Position Summary:

The Director of Legislative Affairs manages implementation of NAIS’s legislative agenda and government relations communications outreach to internal and external constituencies, helps develop public policy positions, and works with policymakers and staff, federal agencies, national associations, and NAIS members. Expense budget managed is $60,000.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements NAIS’s legislative agenda.
  • Monitors, reviews, and analyzes legislation and federal regulations related to the independent school community, and its legislative agenda.
  • Develops and oversees policymaker and constituent legislative outreach that includes NAIS’s grassroots/tops network, and its state and local independent school association partners.
  • Develops and nurtures partnerships with coalitions and strategic partners that advance NAIS’s legislative agenda.
  • Oversees the government relations content on the NAIS website.
  • Prepares monthly government relations online newsletter and oversees production.
  • Works with other members of the Team to write advisories on legislative and regulatory topics for the membership.
  • Provides members with information on legislative and regulatory issues as needed.
  • Interacts with key decision-makers in Congress and the Executive Branch agencies.
  • Develops annual budget for legislative and outreach activities.
  • Serves as member of the staff support team for the NAIS Board’s Public Policy and Government Relations Committee and oversees the government relations reports.
  • Serves as an engaged and involved team member, supportive of the varied experiences and perspectives of internal and external colleagues.
  • Supports and actively builds an office culture dedicated to superior customer service that exceeds member expectations.
  • Works within the team and among teams to ensure that decisions are made to further the organization’s mission and goals, particularly the goals of modeling multiculturalism and helping to build inclusive school communities.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as assigned.

Essential Skills, Education and Experience

  • Friendly and engaging personality.
  • Knowledge of federal legislative and regulatory issues and processes.
  • Knowledge of current work technologies; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to think critically.
  • Ability to be a consensus builder and to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Availability to travel and present as requested.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree and five years government relations and/or communications experience.
  • Passionate about K-12 education and familiar with private, independent schools.
  • Ability to handle multiple activities simultaneously with strong project management and meeting planning skills.
